Conserving Carolina invites the public to join them for a free lecture entitled, “The History of Forestry and Ecological Practices of the Cherokee,” presented by Watson Harlan, historian and citizen of the Cherokee Nation, on Saturday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve.

Participants will learn about the agricultural practices of the Cherokee Nation from pre-contact to Removal and the relationship between history, ecology and contemporary issues, drawing a line from the agricultural history of the past to issues of today. Following the presentation, there will be an open discussion with guests about the issues and effect of invasive species and climate change on local ecology and ways that traditional knowledge can be transmitted to improve the ecological health of farms and gardens throughout contemporary life.
