TRYON—The return of Tryon’s Literary Open Stage on September 13 was a “smashing success,” with more than 30 writers and listeners in attendance at Upstairs Artspace, the event’s monthly venue. The third Wednesday of each month starting at 6:30 p.m. has been established as the ongoing schedule. The next Literary Open Stage will be on Wednesday, October 18.
“A smashing success,” declared host and organizer Lee Stockdale. “I wondered, since it’s just starting back, if anyone would show up. It’s a testament to how many writers we have in the area, and how many people support the literary arts. We greatly appreciate Upstairs Artspace letting us use the gallery as our monthly gathering place.”
The inaugural Literary Open Stage featured 33 writers and listeners in attendance. All 10 slots for writers to read original work filled up quickly. The event included seasoned, published, and award-winning writers, as well as writers who had never read their work in public. Also included were writers who nobody previously knew were writers; in fact, it was these writers’ work that was often the most poignantly self-revealing. Comments from attendees were uniformly positive that the Literary Open Stage was back at Upstairs Artspace.
Literary Open Stage provides a healthy and welcoming outlet for creative writers—poetry, fiction, prose, nonfiction and memoir. Writers are afforded five minutes each to read from their work. The sign-up sheet fills quickly!
Upstairs Artspace, a nonprofit contemporary art gallery, is located in downtown Tryon at 49 S. Trade St., next door to the Tryon Theatre. For more information, please contact Stockdale at (828) 458-1632.
