Phase 1 to begin next month
SALUDA—At the Saluda Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, September 20, City Manager Steven Orr and Hunter Marks of WaterMark Landscape Architecture presented the first phase of the upcoming expansion to McCreery Park.
The park expansion is set to include enlarging the playground and adding an amphitheater, garden terrace, and other outdoor amenities. “The idea is to make McCreery Park the center of downtown,” Marks said during a meeting in March.
Phase 1 of the project will begin by October 15 and will end by April 2024, and phase 2 will begin in May 2024 and conclude by August 2024. Phase 3 begins in November of next year and will end by March 2025. Phase 4 is yet to be determined and funds are still being acquired.
Funding for phases one and two is already secured.
“The main part of phase one is to get the ramps in, get the amphitheater in, and then be able to move to phase two, which would be up at the scout hut,” said Orr.
Construction for phase one includes new retaining walls, seating, steps and the terrace, as well as a sidewalk for the amphitheater. Also included are utilities such as lighting and waste management. With demolition and grading, the total for phase one comes to $220,628.
“It’ll really be a centerpiece for Saluda,” said Marks. “I think it really will.”
McCreery Park is located at the intersection of Greenville St. and Main St. in downtown Saluda.
