Over the weekend, a diverse range of purchases will be exempt from the state’s 6% sales tax and other local taxes. The items range anywhere from clothing, accessories, shoes, school supplies, backpacks and computers. Some dorm room accessories are applicable, as well. The items are tax-free whether they are purchased onsite or online.

“With the increased cost of inflation, this year’s Sales Tax Holiday is a welcome relief for families. Everyone saves money during Tax-Free Weekend, particularly on back-to-school essentials,” said SCDOR Director Hartley Powell.

Ineligible items include digital cameras, smartphones, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches and furniture.

Also known as Sales Tax Holiday, the first Tax-Free Weekend in South Carolina occurred in the year 2000. Last year, South Carolinians spent $26.2 million on tax-free products during the weekend.

More information, including a list of eligible tax-free products, can be found at dor.sc.gov/taxfreeweekend.
