TRYON–Tryon Fine Arts Center congratulates the artists who received awards at this year’s Showcase of Excellence. The winners were announced at the opening reception on February 4, in the JP Gallery located at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.  

 

Showcase of Excellence recognizes high school artists and visual arts instructors from upstate  South Carolina and western North Carolina. There are 128 works of art currently on exhibit.  Tryon Arts and Crafts School Executive Director Will Barclift served as juror for this year’s  showcase. 

 

The exhibit continues through Saturday, February 25 with gallery hours Tuesday-Friday 12  noon-4 p.m., Fridays 4-6 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m-1 p.m.

 

Winners for the 2023 Showcase of Excellence are: 

 

Best in Show: Recreation of “Portrait of the Artist Holding a Thistle” by Albrecht Dürer (Photography/Digital Media) by Veronica Glinyany,  Dorman High School, under the instruction of Robert Urban and Austin Baker. 

 

In the Drawing category: 

1st – “Abscond” by Antanina Kutsilina, Greer High School 

2nd – “Beauty in Bloom” by Abigail Athelli, Greer High School  

3rd – “Moonlight Reality” by Taylor Huff, Boiling Springs High School 

 

In the Painting category: 

1st – “Two-Faced” by Madelyn Laye, Dorman High School 

2nd – “Cockfight” by Savannah Hicks, Chapman High School 

3rd – “Self Portrait” by Linda De Angelo, Boiling Springs High School 

 

In the Printmaking category: 

1st – “Layers of Lilies” by Nicole Goodwin, Spartanburg Christian Academy 

2nd – “The Tranquility” by Emily Lòpez Jóse, East Henderson High School  

3rd – “Regrowth from Junk” by Drew Canada, Spartanburg Christian Academy

 

In the Photography/Digital Media category: 

1st “Finally Returned” by Gabriel Schlesinger, East Henderson High School 

2nd – “City View” by Caleb Swafford, Spartanburg Christian Academy 

3rd – “Childhood Fears” by Sophia Baugh, Spartanburg Christian Academy 

 

 

In the Mixed Media category: 

1st – “Mama Bird” by Kaitlynn Starling, Dorman Freshman Campus 

2nd – “Entrance” by Kaley Jackson, Chapman High School 

3rd – “The Discovery!” by Maggie Beard, Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy

Honorable Mention – “Old Becomes New” by Austin Mace, Polk County High School 

 

In the Sculpture category: 

1st – “Rose” by Aileen Ocampo, Dorman Freshman Campus 

2nd – “Marilyn Mask” by Mia Johnson, Greer High School 

3rd – “The Face of Klimt” by Madison Tucker, Greer High School 

 

Congratulations to these talented artists and their teachers! In addition, gallery visitors may vote  for the People’s Choice Award to be announced at the show’s closing.
