Polk County’s indoor track and field teams closed the home portion of their schedule Saturday with the annual WNC Polar Bear Championships in G.M. Tennant Stadium.

 

Nathaniel Rhein led the Wolverine efforts for the day, winning the triple jump and taking second in the 55-meter hurdles. Rhein cleared 40 feet in the triple for the second time, his leap of 40-6 just two and a half inches short of the school record of 40-8 1/2 set during the 2009-10 season by Ethan Rhodes.

 

Rhein’s time of 8.84 in the hurdles is also just a half-second off the school mark of 8.28 set during the 1998-99 season by Brooks Lookadoo.

 

The Polk boys also got second-place showings from Kole Powell in the shot put, Kristopher Brooks in the pole vault and the 4×400-meter relay team in earning a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

 

Three Wolverine girls recorded third-place efforts: Maggie McCammon in the high jump, Elizabeth Vitale in the pole vault and Lindsey Dotson in the shot put.

 

Polk County’s boys and girls teams are scheduled to conclude their regular season on Friday at the Falcon Last Chance meet at West Henderson.
