Humankind is pretty much the one species that tends to be in denial about many things, often burying their heads in sand more than any ostrich ever has. 

 

We think we know it all—and keep the silly notion it’s all about us. We let ourselves live in an echo chamber, and believe what’s most convenient to us. We don’t like to change, or consider better ways to do things. 

 

The truth is shoved under the living room rug to gather dust—and nothing changes. We think we’re entitled and demand it to be our way.

 

We don’t learn from our past mistakes—nor have enough sense to figure out bald-faced lies that we want to believe, so we do. The truth of course is still under the rug—we just walk over it, whether too lazy or too blind to pull back the corner and see.

Thanks to SCLT and Polk County Community Foundation’s partnership, free swimming lessons are available again at Twin Lakes this summer (June 20-July 22) for Polk County residents and those living in the Saluda zip code. Instructor Brian Lilburn, who has 20+ years of experience teaching swimming, is scheduling daily one-on-one lessons of 15-20 minutes daily (Monday through Friday) between 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Children can start lessons as young as 12 months old. Saluda Living in Place (SLIP) Veterans’ Program will host the Second Annual Flag Disposition Program on Flag Day, June 14, 8:30 p.m. at the McCreery Park stage. After a short program, flags will be ceremoniously burned at sunset. The Top of the Grade Summer Concert Series returns at McCreery Park with Fancy and the Gentlemen on June 24, 7-9 p.m. 

 

Pot luck/bingo night at Saluda Center is June 27, 6 p.m.  

 

The 58th Annual Coon Dog Day  is July 9, 12-9:30 p.m. 

 

On Coon Dog Day, July 9, the Saluda 5K will be a project/fundraiser for Saluda Elementary School. The 3.1 mile run begins on Main Street at 8 a.m. and follows the traditional Coon Dog Day 5k route.
