It’s an everyday occurrence. A dog is found wandering along a road in Polk County, homeless, flea ridden, hungry, scared, traumatized, and exposed to the elements.
Sometimes a Good Samaritan comes along and the dog is rescued, either taken to a home or surrendered to the Foothills Humane Society, a no-kill shelter with a compassionate staff and volunteers, where it can stay until someone gives it a home.
Right now the kennels are full and I am saddened by this. I recently adopted a third dog to add to my small menagerie. My first two were from the Savannah Humane Society. This little girl is from FHS.
When I first took her home she had been curled up in a blanket in one of the small dog cages. She weighed 4 lbs., was 15 years old (approximately), had 3 teeth (most rotten), and apparently had been dumped by the side of a road (I ask that I not be told the back story of these sweet dogs and cats).
In the month plus since her rescue she has gained 25% of her initial weigh, has found her voice, developed a personality, and now guards the house with the rest of the pack. No matter than she is stone deaf and suffering from cataracts. She is fierce! My vet said, “She looks like a different dog!”
Please consider an adoption from FHS, especially one of the bigger dogs, all of whom are in need of homes, and most of whom will be a great addition to your family. All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before being released for adoption. Can’t adopt but want to help?
