Sheriff Tim Wright (R) will file for re-election in 2022

POLK COUNTY—Polk County Sheriff Tim Wright (R) recently announced he plans to seek re-election. 

Wright has been the sheriff since 2018 after winning a Republican primary and defeating a Democrat on Election Day. Wright succeeded former sheriff Donald Hill (D), who did not seek re-election in 2018 after serving as sheriff for 10 years. 

Wright served in the United States Navy then spent 24 years with the Tryon Police Department prior to being elected sheriff. 

Wright says he has consistently worked towards greater transparency and accountability within the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and on building partnerships with community organizations and regional resources. 

He says some of his accomplishments since taking office include: redeployment of personnel to patrol operations within assigned geographic zones; standardization of all incident reporting into a single records management system; development of professional standards and career pathways for each position in the office; full standardization of vehicle fleet operations and issued equipment; complete revamping of the hiring and background investigation processes; implementation of Public Information and Community Program Manager roles; record fundraising events for children in need and implementation of a bi-annual citizen’s academy.

No one has yet announced that they will challenge Wright in the bid for sheriff. 

Filing for the 2022 election, which locally will include sheriff and county commissioners, will be in December.
