Take a break from grim news, Dear Reader, and read on.

Last night, I scarfed down two moon pies and a glass of wine for dinner. Strange times can mean strange dinners now and then. It may have been a strange combination, but it was pretty good with the added bonus of no work involved! The jasmine is blooming at the front door, the skies are grumbling and black, the cat has food in her bowl, I have a book to read. Carry on. Don’t forget to smile, my friend.

The mockingbird sings her clear, beautiful songs: every note perfection, her heart in every one. Even if she borrows the song book of other birds (and sometimes our whistling), she’s Queen of Song. I remember when I was a teenager, trying to sneak in the back door at a past-curfew hour: the mockingbird out in the regal magnolia would start to sing. Loudly. Of course, I was busted thanks to that tattletale bird and a watchful mother’s radar ears.

So listen to the mockingbird’s thrills, have a moon pie (or two), inhale the scent of jasmine on the breeze, hold a book. Watch fledglings leave the nest, feel the morning sun warm your face. The roses are blooming, weeds growing, and the frogs are happy. Keep the singing bird in your heart. And a smile.

The Saluda Tailgate Market’s opening will be delayed until June.

The Community Pop-up Pantry is open for drive-thru only; Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Saluda Presbyterian Church parking lot. Please follow guidelines for car line-up at the Saluda Baptist Church parking lot: volunteers will point the way if you aren’t sure. The pantry partners with the Asheville MANNA food bank; to volunteer, call Saluda Church of the Transfiguration, 828-749-9740. Donations can be mailed to Church of the Transfiguration, designated for the Pop-Up Pantry, 72 Charles Street, Saluda NC 28773. Your donations and support are needed more than ever! Thank you to the volunteers who make this happen, and to our local businesses who support it: Wildflower Bakery, Wakey Monkey, Green River Barbecue and Saluda Dollar General.

Saluda Library is offering curbside pick-up on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for items requested through the on-line catalog. The drop box has reopened for returns.

Good News: Dana Browning is coming home; with many thanks to Lauretta Cook and Gail Slaughter who will fly to Florida to help her. Soon, Saluda folks will do a little parade at the Laurels to welcome Dana back.
