As part of an on-going mission, several volunteers have been removing exotic, non-native plant species from many of the park areas in Tryon. Last week, workers concentrated their efforts at the historic Tryon Cemetery on Markham Road. The town cemetery is packed full of several invasive plants including but not limited to Chinese privet

The volunteer workers were Vard Henry, Richard Henson, Robin Herron, Susie Hursey, John Lane, Joe McConnell, Jerry Soderquist and John Vining. The group created several piles of undesired plants which were cut away from grave markers and decorative stone walls inside the cemetery.

Each month the Tryon Parks Committee, along with several hard working volunteers, are trying to rid public spaces of invasive woody weeds. The next scheduled cleanup is Wednesday, April 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
