Local area providing shelter for animals

POLK COUNTY—As Dorian was expected to affect the South Carolina coast on Wednesday as a Category 2 hurricane, the local area has been offering shelter for horses and pets since last week. 

Polk County Animal Control Officer Patti Lovelace posted a list of small animal boarding facilities in the area as well as stalls for horses. 

FENCE and Harmon Field are offering their stalls for horses for free for any evacuees and the Tryon International Equestrian Center is offering its stalls at $25 each. 

Some of the stipulations are for the horse owners to clean the stalls they use before they leave and to bring supplies with them. 

Lovelace also posted a list of 15 animal boarding kennels between Greenville, S.C. and Asheville for evacuees to board small animals if needed in the area.
Dorian brushed the coast of Florida Tuesday after hitting the Bahamas as a category 5 Hurricane, one of the biggest in recorded history. The hurricane was expected to be moving up the coast in a northwest direction at 2 mph as of Tuesday. It was expected to affect the South Carolina coast as a category 2 hurricane on Wednesday, then the North Carolina coast before heading back out to sea. 

There is expected to be little effects in the Upstate besides some wind and cloud coverage. 

Several emergency agencies from Spartanburg County, as well as local American Red Cross crews were leaving for the coast to help out those in need. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster called for an evacuation of 8 counties in South Carolina, with schools and hospitals closed near the coast. The storm surge is expected to get to 5-10 feet along the South Carolina coast.
