Lanier Library director Amber Keeran will speak at the Tryon Historical Museum on Wednesday, August 21 at 5:30 p.m. This is the exact day when Lanier Library was founded 130 years ago. She will also tell about other upcoming library events as well as share stories about Lanier’s history and unique status as one of only 16 remaining subscription libraries in the U.S.
Lanier is supported entirely by memberships, donations, grants and endowments. Use of the library and its many programs are open to the public but only members may check out books.
When founded, Lanier was open to “women only”.
The story goes that five feisty ladies decided over tea that the town should have a library is a tale worth telling.
Starting from its humble beginning as a bookshelf that rotated from business to business, Lanier has grown like to the comfortable building that now occupies the corner of Chestnut and Melrose Avenues.
All events at the Tryon Historical Museum are free and open to the public. The museum is located at 26 Maple Street in Tryon.
