Town of Tryon offers $500 for information on Harmon Field vandalism 

 

TRYON—The Town of Tryon is offering a $500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of individuals who were responsible for recent vandalism at the town’s building at Harmon Field.  

The vandalism was discovered on last Monday, April 22, according to the Tryon Police Department, with damage estimated at $40,000.  

“It is believed the incident took place over the weekend of April 19,” Tryon Capt. BJ Bayne said. “A tremendous amount of damage was done to the building. Items were thrown through windows, doors smashed, furniture broken and walls busted to the extent of the damage estimated around $40,000.”  

The Town of Tryon owns the building, with town officials recently discussing wanting to sell the building.  

Tryon obtained the buildings and the open-air gym years ago through a state grant and sold one of the buildings to Tryon Arts and Crafts.  

Tryon Town Council have discussed in recent months selling the building, but there are requirements that must be met because the building was acquired with state recreational funding.  

The building was initially built as the Tryon High School in the 1960s, then served as Tryon Middle School prior to Polk County Middle School being constructed in 2005.  

“We are hoping someone saw or heard something that would lead us to the identities of the offenders,” Bayne said.
