The celebration of National Quilting Day at the Landrum Library on Saturday, March 16 featured many new and vintage quilts by members of the Landrum Quilters. National Quilting Day event co-chairs, Chris Wilde and Laurie Blair, were very pleased with the attendance. Visitors attended from a wide area around Landrum, and from both North and South Carolina. 

All sizes of beautiful quilts, wall hangings, art quilts, home decorating and fabric craft items such as purses were on display. The event was warmly viewed by many quilters and visitors. Attendees were treated to members who were demonstrating the art of hand and machine quilting and the different stages of quilt creation. Members were available to answer questions on a range of quilting topics and on the care or storage of quilts. 

Vintage quilts on display had time honored stories to tell especially, one red and white vintage quilt, displayed by Chris Wilde. Vintage red and white fabric quilts date generally from the 1840’s through 1920’s. Chris had worked to restore the quilt in a way to be able to show the wonderful hand sewn properties by the creator. She shared that “a vintage quilt is a legacy of family stories that enhance the richness of the quilt and it becomes the generational fabric of a family much as a treasured family member. However, when information is incomplete or not available the current owner of the quilt is left with always yearning for the history.”
