Mayor presents town clerk with designation

COLUMBUS — Columbus Town Clerk Monica Greene earned the designation of Master Municipal Clerk, which the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Inc. recently awarded her.

The Columbus Town Council met Thursday and presented Greene with the designation.

Columbus Town Manager Tim Barth said Greene spent a significant number of hours and courses to receive the designation.

“It’s not something you can do in a year or two,” Barth told the council. “It’s some you have to earn over a course of years. It’s worth recognizing.”

Greene thanked the council and the town for allowing her the opportunity to continue her education.

Columbus Mayor Eric McIntyre presented Greene with a certificate.

The IIMC grants the MMC designation only to municipal clerks who complete demanding education requirements and who have a record of significant contributions to their local government, community and state.

The IIMC was founded in 1947 and has 14,000 members throughout the United States, Canada and 15 other countries.

“In light of the speed and drastic nature of change these days, lifelong learning is not only desirable, it is necessary for all in local government to keep pace with growing demands and changing needs of the citizens we serve,” said Stephanie Carouthers Kelly, IIMC president and a fellow MMC title holder. “Your city can take immense pride in Monica’s educational accomplishments and achievement of this milestone.

“On behalf of the IIMC Board of Directors, I am honored to endorse the conferring of MMC to Monica P. Greene, MMC of Town of Columbus. We share your pride in this achievement and we applaud your support of the role Monica plays in your city.”

Columbus recently gave Greene other duties after the retirement of assistant finance officer Kathy Gregory. Greene will split her duties between town clerk and assistant finance officer.
