MILL SPRING – If you haven’t purchased your tickets for the World Equestrian Games (WEG), there is a way to be a part of all the action behind the scenes this fall. The Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) is now accepting applications for volunteers.
According to TIEC Director of Community Engagement Katherine McMahon, TIEC will need approximately 3,500 volunteers to help with WEG. She said that TIEC relies on the wonderful volunteers to help with the many aspects of hosting an international event such as WEG. Volunteer positions include everything from jump judges and shuttle drivers, to people helping with hospitality and information.
“We have [volunteer] positions for everybody 18 years and over,” she said. “They don’t have to have any horse knowledge or experience. We have something for everyone.”
Those interested in volunteering are asked to fill out an online inquiry form at www.tryon2018.com. A press release from TIEC stated the online inquiry form is the first in a series of steps to complete an online application. A “volunteer portal” will be launched in March with more information.
Those who have filled out the inquiry information will receive an email with a link to complete the application process. Anyone who has previously filled out the online inquiry form on the Tryon 2018 website does not need to resubmit the form to receive an invitation to the online volunteer portal. TIEC does state, “Not everyone who signs up is selected!”
On the days they are working, volunteers will receive credentials to enter the events where they are working, free of charge. TIEC does not guarantee that volunteers will be positioned to “see” the WEG events while they are on duty.
In addition to being part a world event, seeing top riders and horses and meeting people from all over the world, there are a few other perks for the volunteers during the World Games. First, they will receive one transferrable pass to the World Equine Expo for each day they are scheduled to work. TIEC will also provide foundation orientation and specific training prior to the event and meals and scheduled breaks for all volunteers during their workdays.
Volunteers who need housing in the area can either rent accommodations or apply for complimentary lodging with a local host within a one and a half hour drive of TIEC. Shuttle access at pickup locations will be provided for volunteers to ride to and from the venue with spectators.
It will cost each volunteer $35 to purchase a uniform package including shirts, a hat and a pin. For more information about volunteering visit tryon2018.com/page/volunteer.
