Karen Johnston’s passing on July 13 of this year left a huge hole not only in the lives of her family and friends, but also in the Tryon area and its vibrant arts community.

A long-time member of Tryon Painters & Sculptors, Karen was for many years a fixture in the gallery, the classroom and on the board of directors.  She was also instrumental in the acquisition and physical move to TPS’ current location at 78 North Trade Street in Tryon. Karen was an accomplished and respected artist who loved to paint, delighting in exploring different media as her talent continued to grow.

Karen loved children and education, gaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in special education, after which she taught in public schools in Raleigh, N.C., and Lexington, Ky.

Following her death, friends and TPS members came forward with generous donations to TPS in memory of Karen.  As a result, the board of directors has established the Karen Johnston Education Fund, the purpose of which will be to provide art instruction to children and youth, through in-class projects as well as workshops during holiday and summer breaks.

Additional contributions from the community and friends, both near and far, are sought to ensure that the fund is sustained and continues to provide experiences in art education for children for years to come.  Donations should be sent to TPS, P.O. Box 384, Tryon, NC  28782.

Karen loved children, she loved education, and she loved Tryon Painters & Sculptors.  The Karen Johnston Education Fund will keep that love alive.

Tryon Painters & Sculptors is a 501c3 Non-Profit.  All donations are tax deductible.
