Special Cases: Not enough Band-Aids

Published 4:48 pm Thursday, December 7, 2017

I’ve just returned from another ECG and thus far all vital signs are good. I expect to have my fifth bladder tumor removed after the first of the year but in the meantime there are other things to take care of.

I met with Verna Wilkins from Forever Dream Senior Sanctuary, a rescuer who does God’s work. She had an old female Chihuahua that was found on the side of the road. I promised Verna I’d make her one of Lennie’s kids.

Dr. Mills at Landrum Vet looked her over. (As an aside, in the short time I’ve known him, I’ve grown quite fond of this pleasant man.) We concluded Nomad (the name I’ve given her) is about 13 years old. She may have a neurological problem or a head trauma, which has caused her blindness and wobbling when she stands. She has all sorts of mouth infections and blood tests have been taken. No fecal tests could be taken at this time because there wasn’t anything to draw from.

The thought of this sweet, frail little girl on the side of the road, unable to see, tears my heart apart. Between Verna and me, we’ve promised Nomad that she will have every chance at a decent rest of her life.

I’ll be going over to Cloverfield Vet to see if I can help an old soldier’s 4-year-old dog that has intestinal problems. The dog will have to go Upstate and I said I’d tell them he’s one of Lennie’s kids. I won’t be able to get there till Thursday but I promised I’d take care of whatever is needed through my fund. More to come as I learn.

I just paid nearly $600 for Goldie and Gilda, the mother and daughter Beagles from a large group rescued from one house. I’ve been told that they’ve been accepted to a Beagle rescue. All in all, the whole group has drawn nearly $10,000 from Lennie’s fund which at the moment is getting dangerously low. I hate to have to say no from lack of funds. I have said this many times, “There are just too many wounds and not enough Band-Aids.”

I make this plea at the end of each year, “Give to your favorite charity as I do and if there’s some left over, please remember my kids.” Lennie’s Fund Inc. or just Lennie’s Kids are totally tax deductible. I’m asking for them because they cannot ask for themselves.

In closing, I’d like to dedicate this article to the memory of Barbara Beltoff, a dear, dear friend and supporter. Please offer your prayers for her and her husband, Richard. We have lost an angel.

Thanks for listening.
