St. Luke’s HealthTalk provides information on lymphedema

When surgery or cancer treatment affects lymph nodes, patients sometimes suffer from lymphedema or swelling (edema) in the arms and legs. This swelling can be painful and unsightly as the lymphatic fluid builds up and prevents normal drainage. The affected limb becomes swollen and less flexible.
For many, lymphedema causes pain and anxiety as patients feel they have no control and no cure. But there are tips and treatments to alleviate swelling, such as manual lymph drainage, compression stockings and gentle exercise.
St. Luke’s Hospital’s lymphedema specialist Sarah Compton, MSRS, PT, CDT-MLD, will present information and encouragement for patients affected by the pain and swelling of Primary (congenital) and Secondary Lymphedema.
A free HealthTalk, “Managing Lymphedema: What Is It and What Can We Do?,” will be presented Thursday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. in the St. Luke’s Community Room at 89 W. Mills St., Ste. B, Columbus.
The program is free and open to the public, however, reservations are requested by calling 828-894-8419. Light refreshment will be served.
