Polk County tallied once in each overtime period Wednesday to hand Mountain Heritage a 3-1 setback in a Western Highlands Conference match in Burnsville.

The Wolverines (4-7-1, 2-2) struck in the first overtime period as Isaac Edwards won a free ball just in front of the net and knocked in the go-ahead goal. Polk County then added an insurance score in the second overtime period as Grayson Jones reached a ball played ahead down the right sideline, dribbled into the penalty area and launched a shot just inside the near post.

Mountain Heritage (2-4-1, 1-3) took a 1-0 halftime lead as confusion over the start time of the match left Polk County only a few minutes to dress and warm up. But the Wolverines warmed to the task in the second half and got the equalizing goal as Clark Phipps headed in a Carson Marshall corner kick.

“We played well,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo. “We possessed the ball most of the game. We kept the pressure on them and it paid off at the end with a win.”

Polk County returns home Monday, hosting Madison in another WHC match.
