Sports rivalries generally produce gut-wrenching action, and Wednesday’s varsity volleyball clash between long-time rivals Polk County and Landrum was no exception. Polk outlasted the Cardinals, three games to one, in the best-of-five set at Landrum, with first, third and fourth-game wins of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-10, while Landrum topped the Wolverines, 25-21, in the second game. The match was in some ways, a matchup between rival powerhouses Reagan Waddell of Polk, and Nicole Ford of Landrum, each of whom was on their respective games. At right, Waddell is shown bashing the ball back at Landrum. Polk upped its overall record to 12-3, while the Cardinals dropped to 12-7-1. Polk’s next matches are on October 3, when the Wolverines host Owen; on October 4 at Rosman; and October 5, at Avery County. On October 3, the Cardinals visit St. Joseph’s Catholic, and on October 5, they visit Christ Church Episcopal.
