The Rotary Club of Tryon presented A Paul Harris Fellow to Lennie Rizzo for his devotion to rescuing injured, special needs animals in the Polk County area.

When Lennie and his wife, Elaine, moved to the Tryon area some 10 years ago, Lennie volunteered at the Foothills Humane Society, and then became an employee.  It was during this time that Lennie recognized a need that was beyond what the Humane Society could provide.  Thus, Lennie’s Kids began rescuing pets, over seeing their medical needs, and then tirelessly working to find forever homes. 

In order to cover the required expenses, Lennie’s Fund, a 501C, was established.  Over the years, Lennie’s Fund has held various fundraisers to aid in the expenses for his organization.

The Rotary Club of Tryon has a tradition of awarding the Paul Harris Fellow designation to a person who has demonstrated exemplary service to the community through involvement and good citizenship.  The Rotary Organization was founded by Paul Harris over 100 years ago.  The fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation and recognition for a contribution of $1000.00 to the Rotary Foundation.

Presenting the award was Don Lyons, president of the Tryon Rotary Foundation and past president of the Rotary Club of Tryon.  Lyons stated, “Rotary’s motto is ‘Service above Self’.  Lennie’s tireless efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home animals are an example of this motto.  Our community has benefited because of Lennie’s commitment.”
