Longshore sets long jump mark

Polk County’s Marissa Longshore set a school indoor track record Wednesday in the long jump, soaring 16-5 during the Asheville Last Chance Polar Bear meet at Asheville High School.

Longshore was one of a handful of Polk County athletes who headed to Asheville looking to qualify for next week’s state 2A/1A indoor track championships in Winston-Salem. Athletes must surpass certain standards to qualify for the state meet.

Longshore also surpassed the school outdoor record that she set in 2015 of 16-0 and qualified for the state meet on Feb. 10.

The Wolverines had two other qualifying performances on Wednesday. Caleb Potter completed the 3200-meter run in 10:39.4, finishing just under the qualifying time of 10:40, while the boys 4×400-meter relay team qualified with a time of 3:45.45. Team members running Wednesday included Jake Justice, Jared Wolfe, Grayson Jones and Chris Lawrence.

Polk County is slated to host a final meet on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. in G.M. Tennant Stadium. Qualifying times are due to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association by Saturday evening.
