This week, the Polk County Public Library has been celebrating Banned Book Week by throwing caution tape over areas of the library and displaying a set of books that has been banned in some locations and times, ranging from Moby Dick, The Scarlet Letter and Harry Potter to The Lord of the Rings. According to Rishara Finsel, library director, this week celebrates books that have been censored or banned for their subject matter. A contest is being held near the entrance, where visitors to the Columbus branch are invited to guess the titles of two shredded, banned books in the jars for a $10 gift card to Open Road. Visitors are also invited to take a selfie “mug shot” with their favorite banned book at the upstairs display. (Photo by Michael O’Hearn)
