►Tryon holds budget public hearing

The Town of Tryon held a public hearing on Tuesday, June 21 with no comments. The town is considering a no tax increase budget as well as no fire tax increase. Commissioners have not yet decided whether to raise garbage fees. Tryon recessed its meeting Tuesday until next Tuesday at 10 a.m. in order to approve the new budget as well as annual budget amendments. The town’s new fiscal year begins July 1.

►Stearns Park trash cans to be moved back to park

Columbus Town Council heard from resident Ernie Kan last week questioning why trash cans had been removed from Stearns Park. The town said the cans were moved to Main Street because the sanitation contract states they will not pick up unless the cans are on the street. Waste Industries’ trucks cannot go up to Stearns Park to empty them. Council decided to have the town crews pick up the trash from the cans and either move the bags to Main Street or dispose of them in the town dumpster.

►Polk appoints volunteer to recycling board

During the Polk County Board of Commissioner June 20 meeting, commissioners unanimously appointed Edward Goettert to its recycling advisory board. Goettert was the only applicant. The board has two more vacancies.
