To the editor:
While I appreciate the patriotic concern of Mr. Livingston and Mr. Sutherland in regard to the dignity of the Armed Services uniform, it’s worth clarifying that their understanding of the situation was incomplete. (See letters in June 15 edition.)
In accordance with US Navy Uniform Regulations, section 61002, retired Naval personnel are expressly authorized to wear their uniforms for memorial services. I was asked by the Democratic Womens’ Club to participate, on Memorial Day, in a flag raising ceremony, share my experiences in the Navy and my appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice made by many of my shipmates.
It was an honor to be asked to help raise the flag at the Memorial Day Service and speak about what this special day means, not only to me, but to all of us. I believe my wearing the Navy uniform under these circumstances not only was appropriate but added much to the spirit of Memorial Day.
