The Polk County Board of Education voted Nov. 10 to enter into a contract with NCDOT to install two school zone flashing signal lights on Hwy. 9 as drivers approach Polk Central Elementary School from either direction. The school system will pay for the installation of the lights at a cost of $12,000. “We’ve never had an accident there, but this will still be a great thing to have,” said Superintendent of Education Bill Miller. Lambert Ridings, transportation director for the county school system, said that the lights will be installed on the DOT’s timetable and will resemble the ones on Hwy. 108 at Wolverine Trail at Polk County Middle School, pictured here.
