The Tryon Concert Association, now in its 60th year, will present the Brentano String Quartet for the final concert of the season on Thursday, March 26, 2015, at 8 p.m. at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.
The Brentano String Quartet, founded in 1992, served as the first quartet-in-residence at Princeton University where they taught undergraduate students and conducted workshops with graduate composers. The Quartet will be leaving Princeton this fall to join the faculty of the Yale School of Music. Here they will continue to teach and coach graduate students. The Brentano has performed across the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Europe, Japan and Australia. The group was invited to the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition where they performed piano quintet music with the competition’s 12 semifinalists.
The Quartet takes its name from Antonie Brentano, who some believe to have been Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved.” The group’s music ranges from long before Beethoven’s time to music of the 21st century. This includes works from the 15th and 16th centuries, including arrangements of the madrigals of Gesualdo and vocal works of Josquin, to important composers of our time. In 2002 to celebrate their tenth anniversary, the Quartet commissioned ten composers to write companion pieces based on selections from Bach’s “Art of the Fugue.” Recently the Quartet was featured in the film score of the movie, “A Late Quartet.”
One week before the March 26 concert, TCA will present the movie “A Late Quartet” at the TFAC Auditorium. This 2012 film uses chamber music played by the Brentano and especially the music of Beethoven’s Op. 131. The movie will be shown as a special screening on March 19 for subscribers only.
