“The Sky’s the Limit” at the Tryon Depot

In August, the skies will turn red, orange, pink and gold during an exhibit of paintings by Tryon artist Vicki Van Vynckt. The exhibit is titled “Above the Horizon” and will include 20 oil paintings of sunrises and sunsets.
The show will be held at Millard & Company, located in the historic depot building at 22 Depot St., Tryon, N.C.
Live, improvisational music will be performed on keyboard by Aurora Fox, a musician from Weaverville. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The show will run from July 10 through Sept. 5.
The inspiration behind the “Above the Horizon” exhibit started ten years ago and 1500 miles away in Santa Fe, N.M. In 2004, Vicki and her husband Jim moved there from Minnesota when Jim took a job transfer while working for the phone company.
The skies (especially the sunsets) in the southwest were an incredible inspiration and seemed to beg to be painted on canvas. Vicki obliged and began her series of skyscape paintings.
In 2010, they moved across country to N.C. and then settled in the small town of Tryon, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She says: “North Carolina has proved itself to be a beautiful gem of a place.
North Carolina is every bit as scenic as the Southwest, but of course, in a different way. I have never seen so many waterfalls as we have here, and the biggest gem of them all is how friendly the people are.
Vicki Van Vynckt has been creating oil paintings for over 30 years and studied fine art at the University of Southern Indiana. She continued her studies by taking some drawing and plein-air painting courses through the Atelier art school in Minneapolis, Minn.
She teaches oil painting classes and shows her paintings in galleries in N.C., S.C., and N.M.
Her paintings hang in private collections throughout the United States.
