Flags appear in various shapes and sizes, but seemingly always with a personal or special meaning.  Such was the occasion at this month’s American Legion meeting at Tryon’s Post 250.
Diane Lynne Hannant of Tryon made a special presentation of a flag made by her own hands. The talented “quilt maker” had drawn up a beautiful 16” by 32” American flag especially for the American Legion.
Diane is a retired Army Veteran who took up quilting to cope with a painful rheumatic disease. Her talent surfaced in classes she took at Elaine’s Attic in Landrum.  Diane spent two weeks tirelessly hand sewing this special flag to have it completed by Flag Day for its presentation.
Post 250 will permanently display the flag on the wall at the legion hut in Tryon. The flag will be available for public viewing at Flag Day ceremonies scheduled for this Saturday, June 14, at the House Of Flags in the Courthouse Square in Columbus.
The annual ceremony concludes with the proper “retiring” of old or worn flags collected from the public. Polk County’s Honor Guard along with the Boy Scout Troop will open the program at 9:00 AM. The Public is in invited to join Veterans at this impressive event.
Flags presented for disposal may be brought to the event or dropped off at the Depot location in Tryon, or the House of Flags in Columbus.
