The Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 103 hospitals. Approximately 1,600 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demands.

There is also a specific need for blood donations from the African American community whose blood types can be especially compatible with people who suffer from Sickle Cell Disease. African-Americans have up to eight times the genetic trait for Sickle Cell Disease compared to White-Americans, but all who suffer from this disorder have one thing in common, they depend on blood transfusions to help prevent the life-threatening problems associated with this disease.
