Residents in the Woods Subdivision in Columbus have been encountering water discoloration for a couple of months and town officials say they are working to solve the problem.
The water tests safe, but is discolored, according to town officials.
Columbus Town Council met Thursday, April 21 and reviewed an update from town manager Jonathan Kanipe.
“During the past month, the public works department has been working on other manners of determining the problem with the Woods well,” said Kanipe. “As you know, we have had some extensive –  if intermittent – water discoloration issues that we believe are stemming from the well.”
Kanipe said the town has taken water samples for more extensive testing and expects to have those results sometime this week.
While the testing is being done, the town’s public works department plans to install a 6-inch “blow off” at the Woods well that officials say they hope will solve the problem.
“We are continually working to solve this problem, including speaking with officials at DENR (North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources) and the N.C. Rural Water Association for assistance,” Kanipe said.
