Over 300 animals received spay or neuter procedures during grant period

COLUMBUS—Foothills Humane Society recently announced the successful completion of a spay and neuter initiative made possible through the generous support of the Polk County Community Foundation via a dedicated grant award from the Lilian E. and Earl A. Bettinger Charitable Fund.

Over a 7-month period, this grant enabled FHS to significantly expand spay and neuter services, both at its on-site surgical suite in Columbus and through partnerships with local veterinary clinics.

In total, more than 300 animals received spay or neuter procedures during the grant period. The grant covered all costs related to the procedures, including veterinary services, technician support, and medical supplies. The project directly supported the organization’s goal of reducing shelter stay times by providing timely access to essential medical care, making the animals eligible for adoption sooner.

In addition to improving adoption timelines, spaying and neutering promotes long-term health benefits and fosters responsible pet ownership in the community.

“Prior to receiving this grant from PCCF, we had a backlog of dogs and cats waiting to be spayed or neutered,” said FHS Board President Carol Parker. “FHS does not adopt out animals until they are fixed—we want to prevent overpopulation. But limited funds and clinic availability meant animals were staying longer at the shelter. The PCCF support helped us reduce their length of stay, and that’s a wonderful achievement made possible by their generosity.”
