COLUMBUS—Every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon, the Columbus market at Courthouse Square brings together local farmers, artisans, and community members.

This past weekend, marketgoers were greeted by one of the newest vendors, Horun Family Homestead, owned and operated by Drew and Hannah Horun, who specialize in selling organically raised chicken.

Originally sparked by their shared dream of farming, Drew and Hannah’s journey began in different settings. Drew, who grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey, and Hannah, a city girl from Baltimore, never had the opportunity to farm in their early lives. Their paths took a turn when Hannah’s family moved to the area. Their passion for farming was even a topic during their first date.

The couple is committed to regenerative farming practices, inspired by Joel Salatin, a pioneer in the modern homesteading movement who advised them to start with chickens.

“Chickens are a great entry point into farming,” Drew explained. “We encourage our customers to incorporate our products into their everyday meals.”

The couple appreciates the relatively straightforward infrastructure required for raising chickens compared to larger livestock, like cows.

Currently, the Horuns offer whole chickens, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and “raw starter packs,” which include essential parts for making broth. They provide customers with recipe cards to make preparation easy, especially during the off-season for soup.

The couple is also working on a newsletter to keep their customers updated about the farm and its products. They have participated in a handful of markets already and plan to expand to more locations in the future.

“This is only our fourth market,” Drew said, mentioning they have also attended the Saluda Market every Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., and have plans to be at several other local events, including a market in Rutherford County.

The Horuns’ dedication to their new venture is evident in their enthusiasm for farming and animal care. They currently have laying hens expected to produce eggs soon, as well as other livestock like pigs and calves that they aim to incorporate into their growing business.

Hannah fondly recalled visits to an aunt and uncle’s horse farm in Massachusetts during her childhood and how she eagerly helped with chores, fueled by a desire to be close to animals.

“I’ve loved animals since day one,” Hannah shared. “We’re really enjoying the experience.”

Reflecting on their experiences at the Columbus Market, the couple praised the sense of community and friendliness they encountered.

“It’s beautiful to see such genuine interest and kindness from the people here,” Hannah added. “Everyone is so welcoming, which makes it a smooth transition for us.”

As they continue to build their business, the Horuns invite the community to connect with them through their Instagram account and through direct inquiries via email info@hfhomestead.com. They also offer local drop-off options for customers interested in their fresh products.
