POLK COUNTY—This year’s Columbus Fabulous Fourth celebration featured a special contest called “History in the Baking,” as part of the grand re-opening of the Polk County History Museum. The event was held at Zoe’s Place in Columbus on July 4th.
There were two categories in the Youth division and four categories in the Adult division. The categories were for cakes, cookies, and pies, with a fourth category for “other” classification. The judges were Angie Miller, Jessica Jackson, Phillip Pleasants, and Richard Smith.
The overall Youth Grand Champion was Nova Russell, and the overall Adult Grand Champion was Laura Spinks.

For cakes in the Youth Division, first place went to Nova Russell and Ella Sap, second place went to Scottlynn Whitesides and Sophia Smith, and third place went to Jodiann Duncan, Marley Rickman and Alivia LaBlanc. Jubilee Duncan won in the “Other” category.
In the Adult Division for the cakes category, Virginia Denton won first place, Donna Denton won second place, and third place went to Jessica Green.
For cookies, first place went to Laura Spinks, with Jeanette Rickman claiming second place and Virginia Denton winning third place. For pies, first place went to Virginia Denton and second place went to Regan Farfone.
For the Other category, Virginia Denton won first place, Gail Lee Davis claimed second place, and Susan Kirk was third place.
The “History in the Baking” contest had two rules: each entry had to be made from scratch, and the history of the recipe had to be documented, such as a grandparent’s or historical recipe.
The contest was made possible thanks to a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. The Polk County Historical Association would like to thank Zoe’s Place for hosting this year’s competition.
