TRYON — Nestled in the heart of downtown Tryon, a quiet, leafy refuge draws in locals and visitors alike. The Tryon Depot Garden Park, a lovingly maintained oasis beside the historic depot, is once again bursting with blooms—and life.
Managed by the Tryon Garden Club, the park is a favorite place for many to pause, breathe, and soak in the sights and sounds of nature. Towering oak trees provide generous shade on hot days, while bursts of color from native plantings and seasonal flowers delight the eye.
“Bluebirds have found our birdhouse, and recently, a cardinal fledgling was hopping down the path with nervous parents in tow,” said Beth Rounds of the Tryon Garden Club. “There is always something new and interesting to see in the garden.”
This spring, a wave of new plant species has been introduced to the space, part of the club’s ongoing transition to a true habitat garden. Along Pacolet Street, the vibrant pollinator garden hums with activity, from bees darting among blossoms to monarch caterpillars feasting on milkweed. The oak leaf hydrangeas, in full bloom, offer a striking display that stops many passersby in their tracks.
The Garden Club hopes the park’s success inspires others. Those looking to create their own backyard sanctuaries are encouraged to visit www.gardeningforlifeproject.org, a local initiative offering guidance and resources for native gardening throughout the Foothills.
The continued growth and beauty of the Tryon Depot Garden Park wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of the Kirby Endowment Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation and the Town of Tryon—support that helps ensure this little corner of calm and color remains a downtown treasure for all to enjoy.
