TRYON—The Tryon Parks Committee recently nominated Joe Cooper for induction into the Second Wind Hall of Fame, and the SWHF board unanimously approved. He was officially inducted during the Tryon Appearance Commission’s meeting on Tuesday, May 27.
Cooper founded the Appearance Commission in 2007 and still serves as its chair. Under his leadership, the group has awarded $10,000 annually in grants for beautification projects across Polk County. In 2020, county commissioners expanded its role to include $10,000 in annual grants for kudzu removal.
In addition to his work with the Appearance Commission, Cooper has served on the Tryon Arts and Crafts School board and the Tryon Parks Committee. He is also a 25-year member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Cooper, who is married to Cathy Brettman, is known for his love of history, architecture, and dogs.
The mission of the Second Wind Hall of Fame is to honor outstanding volunteers age 60 and older who continue to make meaningful contributions to their communities after retirement. These individuals have “caught a second wind” and begun a new life of service.
Second Wind Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. To request a nomination form, email carolbrowning72@gmail.com.
