Brevard High School secured the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference regular-season championship Tuesday, defeating Polk County 3-0 in the final conference match of the season.
The Blue Devils (14-3-1, 11-1) took control early when Charley Goodwin found the net in the 10th minute to give Brevard a 1-0 advantage. Brevard extended its lead in the 29th minute on a penalty kick.
Polk County (12-4-1, 8-3-1) struggled to generate consistent offensive pressure throughout the match. The Wolverines managed just four shots on goal compared to Brevard’s 10.
Any hopes of a Wolverine comeback were effectively ended in the 66th minute when a Brevard corner kick deflected off a Polk County defender, struck the post and dropped into the net for the final 3-0 margin.
Polk County will learn its first-round playoff opponent on Friday as pairings are announced for the 1A postseason, which begins Monday. The Wolverines currently project as the fifth seed in the 1A West bracket.
