POLK COUNTY—The Foothills Aquatic Club swim team recently celebrated its inaugural swim-a-thon, a fundraising event aimed at helping pay for team equipment, summer meet fees, and other essential needs. Twelve dedicated young swimmers, aged 6 to 15, came together to swim an impressive 600 laps in just one hour, exceeding their initial goal of 500 laps.

Founded in August 2024 by local mom-turned-head coach Mikala Fowler, FAC was created to fill a vital gap in youth aquatic programs in Polk County and surrounding areas. This parent-led swim team invites children aged five and up, welcoming swimmers of varying skill levels, particularly beginners. The club is committed to fostering a passion for swimming while teaching essential skills in a supportive environment.

“Achieving over 600 laps was a tremendous accomplishment,” said Coach Fowler. “The kids really pushed themselves, and the incentive to ‘push’ me in the pool was a fun way to encourage them.”

The event not only provided a competitive challenge but also helped raise enough funds to meet the club’s various needs. Coach Fowler sought assistance from Isothermal Community College to facilitate year-round practice, which generously offered access to its facilities.

“It’s been wonderful to have a place to train consistently,” she adds.

The team practices three times a week, ensuring they continue developing their skills and preparing for upcoming competitions.

With summer fast approaching, the need for continued aquatic programs in the area prompted Fowler to coordinate with the Polk County YMCA for a summer swim league at Gibson Park Pool. Thanks to Ashley Brazell, the YMCA’s operations director, practice times have been arranged so the club can offer a local swimming experience for families during the busy aquatic season.

A few spots are still available for the 8-week summer swim league. Prospective participants or their parents can contact Fowler at 407-252-1029 for more information.
