Landrum extended its winning streak to four games Friday while ending Polk County’s four-game run with a 4-2 victory over the Wolverines in Landrum.

The Cardinals scored twice in the second inning and added two insurance runs in the sixth to secure the non-conference win. Polk County mounted a late rally in the sixth inning but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

The Wolverines were held scoreless until the sixth when Gunnar Alm drew a walk to start the frame. Mark Jarrett also walked, and Alm advanced to third on a passed ball. Karson Scruggs reached on an error, allowing Alm to score and sending Jarrett to third.

Following an out, Alex Perry walked to load the bases before Nate Fagan delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Jarrett, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Alm finished 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and two walks. His seventh-inning double marked the 25th of his career, tying the school record set by Josh Hudson (1999-2001) and later matched by Holden Owens (2014-2018). Jarrett and Scruggs had the other hits for the Wolverines.

Perry went the distance on the mound for the Wolverines, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out one in six innings of work.

The loss drops Polk County to 10-11 on the season while Landrum improves to 17-6. The Wolverines will look to bounce back when they travel to East Rutherford on Tuesday to begin the final week of the regular season.
