Polk County built a promising two-goal advantage Thursday before conference-leading Brevard mounted a second-half comeback to claim a 4-2 victory in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference soccer action at G.M. Tennant Stadium.
The Wolverines (7-2, 5-2) controlled the early proceedings, striking first in the 10th minute when Reeve Carroll controlled a pass from Jasmine Baird on the right side of the penalty area, turned and looped a left-footed shot into the left side of the net.
Polk County doubled its advantage in the 19th minute as Charley Dusenbury collected a Brevard deflection near the end line in the left corner and hit a high line drive that cleared the Brevard goalkeeper.
The Blue Devils (10-2-1, 8-0) began their comeback in the 24th minute when freshman Dana Walls got behind the Polk defense on a long pass and converted a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper.
Brevard, which won its ninth straight match, completed its rally with three second-half goals. Nora Felty equalized in the 42nd minute after Polk goalkeeper Cate Brown fell while diving to stop a shot. Charley Goodwin then gave the Blue Devils the lead in the 47th minute, converting a penalty kick after being fouled in the box before adding an insurance goal three minutes later on a long drive from outside the box.
Brown kept the Wolverines in contention with a diving save in the 61st minute, ranging to her left to deny a bending drive from Felty.
Polk County was set to host Franklin on Friday for a 6:45 p.m. non-conference match.
