Polk boys, girls deliver second-place efforts at Peoples Invitational

Polk County’s track and field teams turned in a number of solid showings Tuesday at the J. Alan Peoples Invitational held at G.M. Tennant Stadium.
The Wolverines finished second in the girls team standings with 136 points, trailing only Rabun Gap (220). In the boys competition, Polk County tied for second place with Hendersonville at 90 points, well behind Rabun Gap’s winning total of 288.
Leading the way for Polk County was Khristian Littlejohn, who captured first place in the boys high jump by clearing 5-8. The junior also contributed to Polk’s third-place finishes in both the 4×100-meter relay (48.75) and 4×200-meter relay (1:34.51).
In girls competition, Karsyn Huskey delivered one of the day’s top performances, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.47. The Polk County girls also claimed victory in the 4×400-meter relay (4:29.77) and 4×200-meter relay (1:55.00) while finishing second in the 4×100-meter relay (53.72).
The Wolverines dominated the girls throwing events with Kiera Littlejohn (30-8.50) and Akeela Cunningham (30-2.50) placing second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Cunningham added a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 76-2, while Littlejohn took sixth at 65-4.
In pole vault, Leah Dotson cleared 7-6 to win the event, with teammate Sofia Avellaneda taking third at 6-6. Beija Olivari placed third in the triple jump (29-2) and fourth in the long jump (13-6).
On the boys side, Davis Young finished sixth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:05.23 and fifth in the 1600-meter run at 4:57.19. Sam Rhein led Polk County in the throws with a sixth-place finish in shot put (37-3) and seventh in discus (89-4).
The Polk County boys capped the meet with a victory in the 4×400-meter relay, posting a time of 3:44.57 to edge Rabun Gap by more than a second and a half.
