Partnership restores hope, rebuilds communities affected by Helene

TRYON—The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation awarded $10,000 to Share Thy Bread to restore hope and help rebuild after Hurricane Helene devastated the region in September 2024. This disaster relief grant provides financial assistance to community feeding partners, who have played a vital role in helping those affected by the storm. These funds will support long-term recovery efforts and assist in rebuilding, repairing, and restoring what was damaged or lost. This grant funding builds upon the foundation’s year-round commitment to address food insecurity by increasing access to nutritious food and supporting nutritional education initiatives.

On average, Share Thy Bread serves 935 families and 2,583 individuals monthly. Since Helene, that average has jumped to 1,137 families and 2,666 individuals. The organization anticipates that number will continue to climb with the ever-growing food insecurity that the people in Western North Carolina are facing.

The most critical need that can be addressed is providing the people in the surrounding area with shelf-stable food and fresh produce that many have difficulty buying. This generous contribution from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation will help the food pantry continually feed community neighbors.

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization operated by a volunteer board of directors comprised of Food Lion associates from different areas of the company. The Foundation focuses on fighting child hunger and helping partner organizations increase their fresh capacity so families can put nutritious meals on their tables. The Foundation’s grant funding aims to support local organizations as they tackle food insecurity and promote healthier lifestyles through nutritional education initiatives. The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves.
