Polk County earned its second straight home victory Wednesday, handily dispatching East Henderson 7-1 in non-conference action.
The Wolverines (7-5) were paced by a masterful pitching performance from Tory Coile, who went the distance while allowing just one hit and striking out six Eagles batters. Coile’s command was exceptional throughout the contest, issuing just one walk and hitting one batter across her seven innings of work.
Offensively, Polk County unleashed a balanced attack that featured multi-hit performances from several players. Mia Bradley led the charge with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, while Coile helped her own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double. Emma Hayford added a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI.
After two scoreless frames to open the contest, the Wolverines broke through in the third inning when Junie Mitchell laced a two-out double. Courtesy runner Kinsley Lancaster subsequently scored when East Henderson committed an error on Sarah Vitale’s ground ball.
The fourth inning proved decisive as Polk County exploded for four runs. Coile opened with a double, and courtesy runner AJ Jackson advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Hayford’s RBI single. Following some aggressive baserunning from Hayford, she scored on Aslyn Scruggs’ groundout.
Bradley then singled, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 4-0. Elizabeth Vitale capped the inning with an RBI single that plated Lancaster, who ran for Mitchell after she drew a walk.
East Henderson (2-9) managed its lone run in the fifth inning, capitalizing on two walks and two wild pitches to break up the shutout. The Wolverines responded immediately in their half of the fifth, adding two insurance runs courtesy of Hayford’s single, an error that allowed Kinley Waters to reach and another productive groundout from Scruggs.
Polk County will return to Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play on Friday, traveling to Hendersonville.
