Polk County scored its first Mountain Foothills 7 Conference victory Tuesday, handing Hendersonville a 7-5 defeat in a league tussle at Polk.
The Wolverines wasted little time establishing control, scoring two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Junie Mitchell drew a walk, followed by consecutive free passes to Sarah Vitale and Elizabeth Vitale to load the bases. Miya Jackson then delivered a timely single to drive in two runs.
Polk County extended its lead in the third inning. Mitchell again reached base via walk and, after two outs, Jackson drew another base on balls. Tory Coile followed with a double, Kinley Waters walked and Aslyn Scruggs capped the three-run rally with a single to give the Wolverines a 5-0 advantage.
Hendersonville mounted a challenge in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs to narrow the deficit to 5-4, but the Wolverines answered with single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Coile reached on an error and later scored following Scruggs’ single, while the sixth-inning run came after singles by Laney Littlefield, Mitchell and Elizabeth Vitale, with Jackson driving in the final Wolverine run with her second hit of the game.
The Bearcats added a late run in the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Jackson led the Polk County offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while Littlefield went 2-for-4 and Scruggs finished 2-for-3. Mitchell reached base in all four plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with three walks, while Elizabeth Vitale went 1-for-2 with two walks.
The victory improves Polk County’s overall record to 6-5, including a 1-2 mark in conference play. Hendersonville falls to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain Foothills 7.
The Wolverines will return to action Wednesday, hosting East Henderson in a non-conference matchup scheduled for 4 p.m.
