LANDRUM— On Saturday, April 5, the Landrum Farmers Market will mark a significant milestone in its history with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its 25th season at the Joe Cunningham Pavilion, 221 W. Rutherford St.

Since its beginning in 2000, the Landrum Farmers Market has evolved into a beloved community fixture, characterized as a true producer’s market where all vendors grow or create what they sell. The journey began when local entrepreneur Charlie Pace backed his truck into the train depot parking lot to sell fresh produce. Under the stewardship of Charlie and later Joe Cunningham and Joyce Davis, the market flourished, attracting more local producers, including bread makers, artisans, and farmers offering a diverse range of products from honey and figs to peaches and fresh ginger.

As the vendor count and customer attendance swelled, the market outgrew its original location. It soon found a new home under the trees on Trade Street, establishing itself as a Saturday morning tradition for residents and visitors alike. Recognizing the need for a more permanent structure, Joe Cunningham, a key figure in the market’s development, sought assistance from city officials. In 2019, the vision took form in the shape of the Landrum Farmers Market Pavilion, a spacious 15,000-square-foot facility dedicated to showcasing local produce and goods.

The inaugural market in the new pavilion was held on May 14, 2022. It features an average of 50 vendors each week throughout the season. Enthusiastic shoppers flocked to the market, demonstrating strong support for local farmers, bakers, and artisans.

The momentum continues into the market’s 25th year, highlighted by a recent pop-up event in March that drew over 1,500 visitors in a single day. This turnout reaffirms the Landrum community’s commitment to fresh, local, and handmade products.

“We look forward to celebrating our 25th year with the community that supports us so wholeheartedly,” said JoAnn James, Co-Director of the Landrum Farmers Market.
