Polk County’s defense continued its recent strong play Thursday with a clinical 2-0 shutout victory over R-S Central in Mountain Foothills Conference action in Rutherfordton.

The Wolverines (5-1, 4-1) notched their fourth consecutive shutout and fifth of the season in keeping the Hilltoppers (2-6-1, 1-4) in check throughout the blustery evening.

Reeve Carroll provided all the offensive firepower Polk County would need, netting both goals on perfectly executed free kicks. The first came with 26:26 remaining in the opening half when Carroll launched a strike from approximately 40 yards out that dipped just under the crossbar, giving the Hilltoppers’ goalkeeper no chance despite getting a slight touch.

The Wolverines maintained their 1-0 advantage throughout most of the contest before Carroll sealed the victory with just 1:55 left in regulation. After Gabby Savaia drew a foul just outside the penalty area, Carroll stepped up and delivered the finish, drilling a high shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

The Wolverines were set to continue their momentum Friday, hosting Highlands in a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Tennant Stadium.
