LANDRUM—The community is invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Landrum Library for a free lecture entitled “Something in These Hills: The Culture of Family Land in Southern Appalachia,” presented by Dr. Mike Coggeshall, Professor of Anthropology at Clemson University. The program will be held on Tuesday, March 25, at 6 p.m. at the Landrum Library, located at 111 East Asbury Drive.
The talk will focus on what ties mountain families to family land in the southern Appalachians, exploring two themes: the duality of the southern Appalachians as both a menacing and majestic landscape and the emotional relationship to family land characteristic of long-term residents of these mountains. Utilizing the voices and perspectives of long-term residents, the talk provides a more fundamental understanding of the “something in these hills” that holds people in place.
This lecture is part of Conserving Carolina’s monthly Speaker Series at the Landrum Library. The following program will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd, when Kevin Kubach and Rachel Moore, biologists with the Statewide Freshwater Research Program of the SC Department of Natural Resources, will present on “Native Freshwater Fishes of Upstate SC – Conservation Challenges & Strategies.”
