Polk County had late scoring opportunities Tuesday but couldn’t turn those into the runs needed to avoid a 3-1 loss to Landrum in a non-conference matchup at Polk.

The Cardinals (3-2) manufactured a run in the first inning on a pair of walks, then turned four singles into two more runs in the top of the third inning to build a 3-0 advantage.

The Wolverines (4-5) left a pair of runners on base in the fifth before finally putting a run on the board in the sixth. Aslyn Scruggs started the rally with a single, followed by Mia Bradley’s second hit of the day. After a double play threatened to derail the comeback attempt, Junie Mitchell reached base on a Landrum error, moving Bradley to second. Sarah Vitale then delivered a clutch single that brought Bradley home for Polk’s lone run.

That would be it for the Wolverines, though.

Bradley’s 2-for-3 performance with a run scored paced Polk’s offense, with Sarah Vitale, Elizabeth Vitale and Scruggs each contributing a hit.

The Wolverines will look to bounce back on Thursday when they host Asheville at 4:30 p.m.
